Richmond Theatre
When we arrived at the theatre, we were warned the evening could get wild and I thought Oh dear!. What have I let myself in for?”. As we entered the delightful theatre, I found myself thinking that it was more suited to an evening of old time music hall than a 70s tribute. As time wore on, I realised that the two genres had much in common and the intimate, little theatre was admirably suited to any entertainment which feeds on audience participation and energy. From the moment the dancers erupted onto the stage, the energy was almost palpable on stage and off. The tribute group were greeted with warm applause which suggested recognition. So, I suspected some of the audience at least were already firm fans. As one ABBA song followed another, I was reminded how good ABBA’s music is and how infectious it is. From the very start feet were tapping and it was obvious quite a few people were dying to get up and dance in the aisles. Looking around the audience I was surprised to see it wasn’t made up of just ladies of a certain age. There was a large sprinkling of men and the age range was really interesting. There were lots of children looking as if they were really enjoying themselves and quite a few silver heads which seemed to be bobbing in time with the music. Throughout I was amazed by the stamina of both singers and dancers, who never once looked like they weren’t having the best time ever. It was quite exhilarating just to watch and great to recognise song after song to join in with. By the second half almost everyone was on their feet swaying, clapping and dancing if there was a space. Normally I thought I would hate that but, in fact, I just loved the atmosphere and the real feel good factor which pervaded the whole show. It’s no Mamma Mia because there is no story as such but as a celebration of the 70s and of having fun, it was a great evening out. As we left my friend said “Look around. Everyone has a smile on their face” What more could you ask? by ACRISE FAULKNER Share this
