The Central School of Speech and Drama combines the traditions of the conservatoire with the cutting edge innovation and enquiry of the best university drama departments.
Central bridges the two sectors. As a small, specialist College of the University of London, it has the largest and most diverse staff who are experts in their field, and the broadest portfolio of drama, theatre and performance-related programmes in Europe.
As the Centre of Excellence in Training for Theatre, Central acts as a hub for the exchange of ideas and best practice in theatre training and research, and as an interface between education and industry.
Students here are part of a community which is passionately engaged in all aspects of performance, drama and theatre.
Theatre is collaboration: between creative writers, actors, directors, artists, designers, technicians, performers, dramaturges and audiences. Those who teach drama, or who study, critique and theorise around theatre are also part of that collaboration, as are those who use drama as therapy or apply its processes within communities to achieve social benefits.
At Central students encounter the whole ecology of theatre in microcosm and have the opportunity to be part of it.
